Next Door to a Star - Review

I was one of those fortunate souls who loved high school and thought those were some of the best years of my life. My quirkiness earned me a place among the loners, the objectors, the loud mouths, hilarious, life-loving band of theatre misfits.

However, it did take me awhile to find my tribe and I remember trying to fit in and failing miserably. Junior high school was tough because up until that point, I had a best friend who was always in the same class as me. Unfortunately, she moved in sixth grade. I felt like I was left behind to fend for myself in junior high. In that sense, I could relate to Hadley.

Reading "Next Door to A Star" took me back to those middle and junior high school years (the lets just go from elementary to high school memories). I was unsure of societal ranking; much less what was supposed to be "cool" or not. I remember wanting to stay home with my books and enjoy the rest of my life away from people and their intentions.

I had flashbacks of some of those intentions while reading. We meet the cool, popular girls who everyone had an opinion about, including which one we'd want to be, which one we'd want to be friends with and which one we're still trying to forget to this day. There is the usual cattiness, teenage backstabbing and the are-we-friends-or-aren't-we moments that most (if not all) adolescent girls go through. And oh! The boy crushes of yesteryears. Author Krysten Lindsay Hager nails it.

I loved Hadley. I love her unsure "sureness" and how she proccessed her friendships, her family and the cute boy down the street. I wish I had known someone like her during those years I was "left to fend for myself." I was more like shy, studios book nerd Charlotte who kept her head down and let the world "sort itself out."

And yes, as the Charlotte of the group, I would have seen that Hadley made mistakes. We've all be there and had questionable choices at some point. But she's still such a good character, a great voice and a wonderful FRIEND, overall.

I will definitely keep this book in mind while Christmas shopping for my pre-teen and teenage nieces. Next door to a star took me back to some of those unfortunate, uncomfortable adolescent/teenage period but I was grateful for those moments.

I walked away from those moments and every single unfortunate and uncomfortable moments, then and since, have helped shape me. Granted, I wasn't feeling it at the time.......

I particularly loved the sentiment Hadley states towards the end.........which I won't spoil here. Suffice it to say, enjoy those moments. I want to impart to my nieces to enjoy these crazy incidents that we'll look back on and hopefully laugh at. But enjoy just being in the moment. "Sit back and appreciate it."

SO if you want to revisit some of the best and some of the worst times of your high school experience, I suggest you read this one. Take a trip down memory lane, relive your first crush, your first kiss and get to know Hadley who lives "Next Door to a Star."

Next door to a Star by Krysten Lindsay - book tour

They like me...they like me not.

NEXT DOOR TO A STAR by Krysten Lindsay Hager
Genre: Young Adult Romance
Hadley Daniels is tired of feeling invisible.

After Hadley’s best friend moves away and she gets on the bad side of some girls at school, she goes to spend the summer with her grandparents in the Lake Michigan resort town of Grand Haven. Her next door neighbor is none other than teen TV star Simone Hendrickson, who is everything Hadley longs to be—pretty, popular, and famous—and she’s thrilled when Simone treats her like a friend.

Being popular is a lot harder than it looks.

It’s fun and flattering when Simone includes her in her circle, though Hadley is puzzled about why her new friend refuses to discuss her former Hollywood life. Caught up with Simone, Hadley finds herself ignoring her quiet, steadfast friend, Charlotte.

To make things even more complicated, along comes Nick Jenkins…

He’s sweet, good-looking, and Hadley can be herself around him without all the fake drama. However, the mean girls have other ideas and they fill Nick’s head with lies about Hadley, sending him running back to his ex-girlfriend and leaving Hadley heartbroken.

So when her parents decide to relocate to Grand Haven, Hadley hopes things will change when school starts…only to be disappointed once again.

Love gone bad.

Is this really what it’s like to live…
Next Door To A Star?

The school year should end right after spring break, because all anyone can focus on is summer vacation. You can’t learn anything new, because all you can think about is all the fun stuff you’re going to do once you don’t have to get up at the butt crack of dawn. Summer always seems full of possibilities.

Nothing exciting ever happens during the school year, but maybe, during summer vacation, you could run into a hot celebrity and he’d decide to put you in his next music video. Okay, it wasn’t like I knew anybody that happened to, but my grandparents did live next door to a former TV star, Simone Hendrickson, and Simone was discovered in an ice cream parlor one summer. Of course, she lived in L.A. at the time and was already doing plays and commercials, so the guy who discovered her had already seen her perform. But hey, it was summer, she got discovered, and that was all that mattered.

Amazing stuff didn’t happen to me. You know what happened to me last summer? I stepped on a bee and had to go to the emergency room. They’re not going to make an E! True Hollywood Story out of my life. I didn’t go on exotic vacations—like today, I was being dragged along with my parents to my cousin’s graduation party. Most people waited until at least the end of May before having a grad party, but Charisma was having hers early because she was leaving on a trip to Spain. I was dreading this party because I didn’t want to listen to everybody talk about how smart and talented Charisma was—making me feel like a blob in comparison—but my mom RSVP’d even though I said I’d rather die than go. My death threats meant nothing. But still, for some strange reason, I had a feeling this summer was going to be different.

The Finishing School by Valerie Woerner - My Review

Note: I posted this on my "other blog" - under the blog tab - because I honestly, do not remember which blog I gave Litfuse Publicity. I am participating a blog tour for The Finishing School by Valerie Woerner and want to cover my bases.
The Finishing School: How One Book Nerd Began Living What She Learned
(Nyree Press, August 2015)
Are you tired of waiting for change to happen in your life? Do you feel stuck, even though you want to live more intentionally?

In today’s world, our most precious pursuit of a life well lived gets squeezed out by the silliest of things: binging on Netflix or ice cream, shopping trips for things we don’t need, bad habits we can’t seem to get a handle on, and so much more. Valerie has been there despite knowing what she wanted for her life. Actually do it? That’s the challenge. After gobbling up all the non-fiction and self-help books her donut-filled belly could handle, she decided it was time to put her knowledge to good use and start actually living it out. You will hear about her journey through victories and plenty of failures and find practical tips to apply to your own pursuit of holiness. You will find homework at the end of each chapter that includes a worksheet to put real change in motion for your own life as well as recommended books to further study those topics that really test you.

My Review:
I love to learn and have my neglected Bible visible in my room on the chance that I feel less of a sinner that day and want more of Christ. I wanted a guidebook. I needed to be serious about finding a church home. I needed more than just being a passerby into my faith.

I needed to go to school for it. I wanted to read this book because for the past few seasons, I really felt like I needed more than a push. I prayed about it. I distracted myself and wrote down things that I could do to change my ways or my life. I put everything in a box and tried to shove it in an invisible closet. I didn't think I needed to pray about it or have the patience to wait for an answer. I tried bargaining ways to get Him to talk to me about what to do next. I've always been a terribly inconsistent student: wanting to learn and find the ways to get the right answer and then wanting the short cuts because getting to the answer frustrated the heck out of me!

I thought I could sit through this book and finish in day, but it turns out that I can't. For a chapter at a time, Valerie lists our distractions, our worries, our own selfish desires and motivations and gives us a breakdown of a plan to breakdown those walls we built for ourselves away from God.

I need to really go back over this book and slow down on the parts that I know I could really use in my life. I love that we get "homework" and there are other book recommendations that I need to check out. I love that she puts personal anecdotes about her story, her faith and how she was as a student, a mom, a nerd. It's safe to say that we are all distracted but we all have a moment in our entire day to give to the Lord, we just choose to do something else instead of giving our day to Him. There are practical things that I want to start doing right now that I never even considered before.

So if you're like me: a worry-wart, a person who needs a to-do list, a guidebook or something resembling a plan of action; I highly recommend this book. But I do suggest you take your time with this book. Pray always for the changes that come. Never ever underestimate the power of God's timing. So from this book nerd who is still searching for the correct answers, I invite you to read another book nerd who began living what she learned in the Finishing School.

(I received this book in exchange for an honest review).

The Song Remains the Same - cover reveal by Kelli Jean

Author: Kelli Jean
Series: NOLA's Own Series, Book #3
“Kenna stood strong, taking my grief into herself. In that moment, if the world had truly threatened to fall, I had no doubt my Baby Girl would hold it up.”

A pillar of strength, Kenna only grows stronger as time passes. I’ve known from the beginning that I was the weak link between us. Always, she’s risen above and beyond the darkness of the unknown that threatens to suck me down. This time…I’ll have to crawl out of that darkness on my own.

“What we have—the kind of love we share—comes at a price. The universe demands it. It’s not free, and it shouldn’t be.”

So many souls make up the fabric of the music. Thousands upon thousands of years, millions of eyes and ears, hands and hearts have seen, heard, created and felt it. There’s only one who sings to me, and in the face of the unknown, I watch him lose the language of the soul. The pain and loss for Phil is so great, I have no way to bring the symphony back into his being, as he has done for me so many times.

Within me for now, for always…The Song Remains the Same.

NO QUARTER, Book #2:

Born and raised in Miami, Kelli Jean traded the tropical heat for the arctic. Now she deals with twenty-four hour daylight in the summer, zero sunlight in the winter, and believes the Northern Lights make up for the mind-boggling amount of ice and snow she has to put up with for seven months out of the year. She’s surrounded by mountains and ocean and sheep, and claims her bizarre sense of humor is what keeps her sane. The insane don’t know they’re insane. Kelli uses her imagination to create worlds she can escape to from the mundane tasks of everyday life, such as washing the damn dishes and vacuuming up Legos off the floor—and don’t get her started on the mad amount of cat hair on the end of the couch. She gave up on that a long time ago. When the household goes to sleep at night, she writes down everything that happened in her head while doing such tedious chores. But she enjoys living in her own head, so that’s pretty cool. Technology terrifies her. She can barely turn on a computer, and was completely shocked when she’d actually written a book on one. To this day, she has no explanation for this baffling mystery. It took her three years to realize she can take screen shots of messages and pictures of bearded, tattooed men with her phone. Now that she’s mastered this task, her phone is slowly dying, and she’s nervous that she’s going to have to buy a new one and it will take her another three years to learn how to use it.

The Only Shark in the Sea Cover Reveal - DelSheree Gladden

Vance Sullivan has always been the rock everyone turns to for help…

His work with patients recovering from traumatic events makes him the perfect person to help his friend, Guy Saint Laurent, with one of his Date Shark appointments. When Vance meets hesitant, frightened Natalie Price, he suspects she’s hiding the truth behind her fears, and he’s drawn in by a need to help her.

Haunted by a terrible event from her past, Natalie can’t even endure being touched without suffering a crippling panic attack…

She doesn’t know why, but Natalie feels Vance might be the only one who can help her put the pieces of her life back together. Despite the tension their arrangement causes with his girlfriend, their bi-weekly sessions seem to be helping…as long as he keeps his promise not to push her to reveal more than she’s ready to share.
Suddenly the tables have turned…

When Vance suffers his own unspeakable tragedy, asking for help is the last thing he wants to do. Drowning in grief and guilt, crushed by betrayal and lies, Vance needs a lifeline.

Natalie has no idea why anyone thinks she can help him, given her own deep-rooted fears—but she knows she has to try.

A twisted notion of justice makes the danger all too real,
and Vance and Natalie realize it might take one broken soul to mend another…
DelSheree Gladden was one of those shy, quiet kids who spent more time reading than talking. Literally. She didn't speak a single word for the first three months of preschool, but she had already taught herself to read. Her fascination with reading led to many hours spent in the library and bookstores, and eventually to writing. She wrote her first novel when she was sixteen years old, but spent ten years rewriting and perfecting it before having it published.

Native to New Mexico, DelSheree and her husband spent several years in Colorado for college and work before moving back home to be near family again. Their two children love having their cousins close by. When not writing, you can find DelSheree reading, painting, sewing and trying not to get bitten by small children in her work as a dental hygienist. DelSheree has several bestselling young adult series, including "Invisible" which was part of the USA Today Bestselling box set, "Pandora." The Date Shark Series is her first contemporary romance series, and her first book in her upcoming new adult series, The Ghost Host, will be releasing 2015.
